Review

In the sweeping and surreal tradition of magical realism, director Harmony Korine presents “Mister Lonely,” a wild journey through the delusions and dreams of a group of lonely misfits.

The film follows Michael (Diego Luna), a Michael Jackson impersonator living in Paris, who is recruited by a Marilyn Monroe impersonator named Shirley (Samantha Morton) to join her troupe of celebrity lookalikes at a remote Scottish castle.

As Michael settles into his new home, he finds himself drawn into the bizarre world of his fellow performers. There’s Charlie Chaplin (Denis Lavant), Abraham Lincoln (Richard Strange), The Pope (James Fox), and even Sammy Davis Jr. (Jason Pennycooke). Everyone is seeking refuge from their own loneliness by taking on the personas of these larger-than-life figures.

Korine takes us on a trippy ride as we watch these characters rehearse their acts, bicker with each other, and explore the countryside. We’re never quite sure what’s real and what’s imagined, as they move between moments of joy and despair.

Throughout it all, Luna’s portrayal of Michael remains our anchor. He navigates this strange world with wide-eyed wonder, but also a sense of melancholy that never quite leaves him. Morton is equally captivating as Shirley, effortlessly shifting between moments of motherly warmth and manipulative cruelty.

At its core, “Mister Lonely” is an exploration of identity and escapism. These characters are all searching for something beyond themselves, whether it’s acceptance or love or simply the chance to be someone else for a while. They’re willing to go to great lengths – even risking their own lives – to live out these fantasies.

But as with any good magical realist story, there’s always a darker undercurrent running beneath the surface. We see glimpses of pain and trauma in each character’s past that hint at why they’ve retreated into these roles. And as the film builds to its surreal and haunting finale, we’re left to wonder whether they’ll ever be able to escape their own loneliness.

Korine’s direction is elegant and assured throughout, never letting the film’s bizarre premise overwhelm the emotional truth at its heart. The use of music is particularly effective, with an eclectic soundtrack that ranges from Jackson’s “Rock With You” to Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s haunting “I See a Darkness.”

In the end, “Mister Lonely” is a strange and captivating film that defies easy categorization. It’s a meditation on celebrity, art, loneliness, and the human need for connection in all its forms. Whether you’re a fan of magical realism or just looking for something truly unique to watch, this film is not to be missed.
