Uncle Kent: A Tale of Millennial Malaise
The wind was blowing hard through the streets of Los Angeles, and I was headed to the ArcLight Cinema to watch Uncle Kent, a film about a single, 40-something artist who finds himself navigating the treacherous waters of modern love.
The movie tells the story of Kent Osborne, played with a subtle intensity by himself. As a popular animator and cartoonist in LA, he spends his days creating wacky characters and trying to keep up with the latest trends. But when his friend Kate (Jennifer Prediger) comes to stay with him for a weekend, he is forced to confront his own loneliness and uncertainty about what he really wants out of life.
The plot is simple but effective, offering a candid exploration of the struggles that many people in their 30s and 40s face today. From casual hookups to online dating woes, Uncle Kent captures the essence of millennial malaise with remarkable sincerity.
As I settled into my seat, I couldn’t help but marvel at how well Osborne had captured the feeling of being adrift in this weird world we live in. His character’s unassuming demeanor and understated humor made him instantly relatable, while his vulnerability and honesty were refreshingly raw.
Jennifer Prediger is equally wonderful as Kate, bringing a quirky energy to her interactions with Osborne that is both endearing and frustrating. The chemistry between them crackles with intensity despite their lack of physical intimacy.

In true Hemingway fashion, Uncle Kent offers no easy answers or tidy resolutions. But sometimes all we need is a little reminder that we’re not alone in our struggles – and that maybe, just maybe, there’s someone out there who understands us better than we understand ourselves.
