“Golda”: The Story of a Determined Leader
The new film “Golda” tells the story of Golda Meir, one of Israel’s most iconic and controversial leaders. Directed by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv, the movie follows Meir (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) as she rises from humble beginnings in Milwaukee to become Israel’s first female prime minister.
The film opens with a young Golda, then known as Goldie Mabovitch, facing anti-Semitic taunts from her classmates in Wisconsin. But despite the obstacles she faces, Goldy is determined to make something of herself. She moves to Palestine in 1921 and becomes involved in the Zionist movement there.
As the movie progresses, we see Golda’s steady rise through the ranks of Israeli politics. She serves as Minister of Labor and Foreign Minister under Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion before taking over as prime minister herself in 1969. Her tenure is marked by several key events, including the Munich Olympics massacre and the Yom Kippur War.
Mirren delivers a powerful performance as Meir, capturing both her steely determination and her vulnerabilities. The supporting cast is also excellent, with notable performances from Igal Naor as Moshe Dayan and Olivia Williams as Rina Mor.
Nattiv’s direction is masterful throughout, capturing both the grand sweep of Israeli history and the intimate moments between characters. The film is beautifully shot by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (who previously worked on “The Tree of Life” and “Gravity”), with stunning locations ranging from Jerusalem to New York City.
Despite its strengths, however, “Golda” has received some criticism for its oversimplification of complex political issues. Some critics have argued that it glosses over Meir’s controversial decisions during her time in office – particularly her handling of the Palestinian refugee crisis.
That said, it’s hard to deny the impact that Meir had on Israeli history. As she famously said, “Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.” Whether or not you agree with her policies, it’s clear that Golda Meir was a leader who was deeply committed to her people and her country.
“Golda” may not be a perfect film, but it’s a powerful tribute to an even more powerful woman. Mirren’s performance alone is worth the price of admission – and the movie as a whole is an engaging and moving portrayal of one of Israel’s most enduring figures.
