In the vast and varied world of cinema, there are few films that can evoke raw emotions and hidden truths like “Hick”. This thrilling cinematic masterpiece, which was released in 2011, tells a tale of a young girl’s journey through life and love in search of her own identity. It is a film that has captured the hearts of thousands of audiences and critics alike, owing to its unique style and brilliant execution.
Set in rural America, Hick follows the story of Luli McMullen (played by Chloe Grace Moretz), a 13-year-old girl who runs away from home with nothing but her dreams for a better life. Along the way, she meets a drifter named Eddie Kreezer (played by Eddie Redmayne) who offers her a ride to Las Vegas. Little does Luli know, but this is only the beginning of an intense journey filled with danger and unpredictability.
At its core, “Hick” is an exploration of the fragility of youth, innocence and happiness. Through Luli’s character arc, we see how she experiences firsthand the harsh realities of giving up childhood too soon. In many ways, it echoes Shakespeare’s own themes on love and loss in his many plays.
Indeed, there are several moments throughout this film that could have come straight out of one of Shakespeare’s works. For instance, at one point early on in the movie, Luli poignantly laments: “You know what I want? I want love to conquer all. But love can’t conquer anything.” This sentiment rings true to classic Shakespearean tragedy where love proves fleeting or impossible to attain.
The performances given by each member of the cast are nothing short than breathtakingly brilliant. Moretz perfectly captures Luli’s innocence mixed with steely determination as she navigates through life’s challenges as they come at her fast and furious pace.
Meanwhile, Redmayne delivers one of his most compelling performances as Eddie, bringing to life a complex and enigmatic character caught in the crossfires of his own broken past. Other notable cast members include Blake Lively, Alec Baldwin, and Juliette Lewis whose characters add to the overall allure of the film.
The screenplay for “Hick” was based on Andrea Portes’ novel of the same name and is a masterwork in its own right. The dialogue between characters is witty and sharp, giving a glimpse into the unique personalities of each character. There are several standout lines that stick with you long after viewing such as when Luli says, “You can’t be lost if you don’t care where you’re going.”
The score for the film is just as memorable as its script. Opening with a haunting rendition of “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” by The Smiths, it sets a tone that is both melancholic and optimistic all at once. This theme recurs throughout the film, amplifying moments of sadness or joy when required.
The cinematography for “Hick” is also commendable. Director Derick Martini does an excellent job capturing the vast beauty of rural landscapes while contrasting them with dark and seedy urban settings as Luli’s journey takes her through strange new territories away from home.
“Breathtakingly beautiful and heart-wrenching,” was how many critics described Hick after it premiered at TIFF back in 2011. And it’s easy to see why this film has since developed a cult following.
Overall, “Hick” is an emotionally charged film that delves deep into what it means to grow up too fast while still discovering who we really are. It’s certainly not an easy ride but then again Shakespeare wouldn’t have wanted it to be any other way!
