Review

In a world of tumultuous love stories, few stand out as powerfully as the mesmerizing and evocative tale of “I Want You”. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, “I Want You” is a film adaptation of a book by Spanish author Jorge Semprún.

Set in the sleepy seaside town of Blackpool, on the northwest coast of England, the movie tells the story of an all-consuming love affair between Helen (Rachel Weisz), a young woman with an insatiable craving for passion and danger, and Martin (Alessandro Nivola), the enigmatic young man who captures her heart. The storyline is hauntingly beautiful in its simplicity and complexity; it is almost as if one is watching a painting come to life.

The film opens with a potent scene of Martin, recently released from prison after serving time for drug smuggling, returning to his hometown. Martin’s demeanor is intense and brooding; he exudes danger even in his near-silent moments. In contrast, Helen appears restless – she yearns for something more than her ordinary life in Blackpool. One day they meet by chance at an amusement park. Their initial meeting is fleeting yet mesmerizing as they both feel an instant connection to each other.

The plot thickens when Martin’s brother Phil (Lennie James) appears on the scene and wades into their lives with ulterior motives. Phil informs Martin that their father has died under suspicious circumstances and has left behind incriminating evidence that could implicate them both in his shady dealings.

While grappling with these revelations, Helen becomes increasingly drawn to Martin’s dangerous nature. She sees him as someone who can provide an escape from her mundane existence. Their relationship becomes more intense amidst this growing chaos and danger posed by Phil’s arrival.

The acting performances are spellbindingly authentic. Rachel Weisz brings a depth to Helen’s character that few actors could have achieved – navigating through the complex emotions of love, lust, and fear with heart-wrenching intensity. Alessandro Nivola’s portrayal of Martin is equally compelling, embodying the gritty aura of a man who has seen and lived through the darkness.

The film’s score, composed by Michael Nyman, is nothing less than sensational. It adds an atmospheric dimension to the story that heightens the tension and emotion of each scene. The soundtrack includes a number of haunting tracks such as “An Eye For Optical Theory” and “Chasing Sheep Is Best Left To Shepherds”.

Filming took place in Blackpool and its surrounding areas. The seaside town provides a backdrop for Martin’s brooding presence. The beautiful cinematography captures the town’s faded grandeur – its aging amusement parks and quaint streets – to embody its setting as a place where dreams can pass and memories linger.

“I Want You” was well-received by audiences at its premiere at Cannes in 1998. It received critical acclaim for its impressive performances, powerful storyline, and stunning cinematography.

Despite being somewhat overlooked during awards season, the film continues to be regarded as one of Winterbottom’s most highly acclaimed works. It was awarded Best Music at the 1998 European Film Awards for Michael Nyman’s score.

The film’s dialogue is concise yet deeply meaningful; every word feels like it has been crafted with thoughtfulness that reflects Gabriel Garcia Marquez style of writing. For instance, when Helen tells Martin that she wants him “more than anything,” he responds with “More than anything? That’s quite something.” Their dialogue is poetic in their simplicity but layered with complexities.

“I Want You” could be called a modern-day romance weaving in various themes including obsession, addiction, loyalty, fear, loss. Winterbottom astutely manages to weave all these elements together without ever losing sight of his central theme. He creates a moving portrait of how our desires can sometimes lead us down a path of dangerous choices.

At the heart of this film, however, is a story about the intoxicating power of love and how it can destroy or redeem us. It’s an unforgettable journey through a world of passion and desire – one that will leave an enduring impression on anyone fortunate enough to experience it.
