Review

In the midst of a crowded field, “Murder by Numbers” is a true standout. This film, directed by Barbet Schroeder and released in 2002, shows us the dual nature of humankind: the light and the dark that we all carry within us. And as someone who has spent years studying vulnerability and human behavior, I am fascinated by this story.

At its core, “Murder by Numbers” is a murder mystery. But it is so much more than that. We are introduced to two high school students- Richard (Ryan Gosling) and Justin (Michael Pitt). They are smart, they are popular, they are privileged- but they are also deeply damaged. Together, they decide to commit the perfect murder- one that will stump even the most experienced detectives.

But what makes this film truly compelling is the way it delves into the psychological makeup of these two young men. Through their actions and their interactions with others, we see just how easy it can be for anyone to succumb to their darker impulses.

The acting in “Murder by Numbers” is nothing short of stellar. Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Richard is chilling- he manages to make us feel both repulsed and drawn to him at the same time. Michael Pitt’s Justin is an excellent foil for Richard- he plays him as vulnerable and desperate for connection.

One of my favorite scenes in the film takes place between Richard and his teacher Franny (played by Sandra Bullock). In just a few minutes of screen time, Bullock captures perfectly what it means to be a caring educator faced with an impossible situation.

The cinematography in “Murder by Numbers” is also worth mentioning. The film has a bleak, almost washed-out look to it that mirrors the darkness at its heart. And yet there are moments of beauty too- shots of the ocean or rolling hills that serve as a reminder that even in the midst of tragedy, there is still beauty to be found.

But what really sets “Murder by Numbers” apart is its willingness to explore uncomfortable truths about human nature. As Richard and Justin plan their murder, we see just how easy it is for them to manipulate those around them. And when the murders are finally committed, we see the devastation that ripples out through the entire community.

This film challenges us to think about our own capacity for darkness. It forces us to confront the fact that even the seemingly brightest among us can be capable of unspeakable acts.

In conclusion, “Murder by Numbers” is a haunting and thought-provoking film that has stayed with me long after I watched it. It asks difficult questions about human behavior and our inherent vulnerability- questions that we all need to grapple with if we want to truly understand ourselves and others.
