Review

Ned Rifle is a film by Hal Hartley, known for his unique and thought-provoking productions. The movie is the third and final installment of the Henry Fool Trilogy, following Henry Fool (1997) and Fay Grim (2006). As a fan of Hartley’s work, I couldn’t wait to see how he would wrap up this trilogy. I was not disappointed.

The film follows the story of Ned Rifle (Liam Aiken), son of Henry Fool and Fay Grim. Ned is on a mission to find and kill his father, who he believes is responsible for his mother’s death. Along the way, he encounters several characters from previous films, including Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) and his sister Fay Grim (Parker Posey).

One thing that struck me about this film was its plot. The story was well-developed, with surprising twists and turns that kept me engaged throughout the entire two-hour runtime.

Another aspect of the movie that I appreciated was its characters. Each character had their own unique personality and motivations, making them interesting to watch on screen. Liam Aiken did an excellent job playing the brooding and conflicted Ned Rifle, while Parker Posey delivered her usual quirky performance as Fay Grim.

The film also had a great score composed by Jeffrey Lewis. The music added to the overall mood of the movie and helped set the tone for each scene.

As someone who enjoys behind-the-scenes information about movies, I found it fascinating to learn that Hal Hartley wrote the script for Ned Rifle in just three weeks! It’s impressive how he was able to create such a compelling story in such a short amount of time.

Additionally, I couldn’t help but admire the cinematography in this movie. The shots were carefully framed and each one seemed intentional in conveying something important about the story or characters.

Despite all these positive aspects, there were some criticisms I had about Ned Rifle. For example, some scenes felt unnecessarily long, which could make the pacing feel slow at times. Additionally, some viewers may find the film’s ending to be unsatisfying or even confusing.

Overall, I believe that Ned Rifle is a well-crafted film that fans of Hal Hartley and the Henry Fool Trilogy will enjoy. The movie has a great cast of characters, an intriguing plot, and impressive cinematography. Although it has its flaws, the positives far outweigh the negatives in this final installment of a beloved trilogy.

In conclusion, I highly recommend watching Ned Rifle for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking movies with interesting characters and complex plotlines. As Hal Hartley once said, “I’m interested in stories about people who are trying to figure themselves out in a complicated world.” Ned Rifle is no exception to this sentiment; it captures the essence of humanity and our struggles with life in a beautifully crafted way.
