Review
In the current age of post-truth, propaganda and the constant manipulation of facts by those who hold power, the relevance of Rob Reiner’s latest film “Shock and Awe” cannot be overstated. The movie is an account of a group of journalists trying to uncover the truth about Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction in the lead up to America’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. It is both a powerful tribute to journalistic integrity and an indictment of the militaristic zeal that has come to define contemporary politics.
At its core, “Shock and Awe” is about truth-seeking at all costs. It tells the story of Journalists Jonathan Landay (Woody Harrelson) and Warren Strobel (James Marsden), who are part of a small team investigating claims made by the Bush administration that Iraq has WMDs in its possession after 9/11. Along with their editor-in-chief John Walcott (played superbly by Rob Reiner himself), they face constant resistance from their superiors and colleagues, who are more interested in sensationalist headlines than diligent reporting.
The film’s storyline echoes themes from George Orwell’s seminal work “1984”, where control over information is used as a political tool to manipulate public opinion. But what sets “Shock and Awe” apart from Orwellian dystopias is its grounding in reality. The plot is based on true events – where journalists struggled to maintain their journalistic integrity while being subjected to intense government pressure.
Reiner does an outstanding job bringing this true story to life on screen. The script accurately presents how publications tried to capitalize on 9/11 fears while portraying President Bush as some sort of savior against terrorism. However, it was not so simple for reporters whose job was far from easy: uncovering official lies about WMDs could break careers or even end lives, as we saw with one character whose associate died for speaking out.
The characters in “Shock and Awe” are all complex, nuanced individuals with their own motivations, fears, and aspirations. This makes the dialogue in the film stand out as particularly authentic. For instance, at one point Landay is asked by a newswoman if he believes that Saddam Hussein has WMDs. He responds “No, I don’t” before explaining how government officials usually were the ones providing “proof” regarding WMDs. This moment highlights the fragility of truth-seeking in an era where political leaders have become experts at spinning facts to suit their agendas.
Even though Harrelson and Marsden lead the cast in “Shock and Awe,” it is Reiner’s character that steals every scene. Although his role might feel somewhat meta given his position as both actor and director, Reiner’s presence adds a layer of seriousness to the film that really benefits its tone.
The movie’s score is inspired by Benjamin Wallfisch’s work on “Blade Runner 2049” which beautifully complements the intense scenes throughout this political thriller. The cinematography also stands out for its ability to convey not only emotion but also tension in crucial moments.
Despite being released during a time when Hollywood is heavily criticising President Donald Trump, Shock and Awe is one of those films that feels timeless. It is a powerful reminder of how important it is for journalists to speak truth to power no matter what consequences they may face.
With tight pacing, excellent acting from its talented cast (its female characters can still be improved), and harrowing themes that continue to resonate today, “Shock and Awe” is an essential piece of filmmaking for anyone interested in history or journalism. It deserves recognition at award shows across the world for its cinematic contribution that’s both educational as well as thought-provoking.
In conclusion, “Shock and Awe” stays true to its namesake; it will leave you feeling shaken and awed. Not since Oliver Stone’s “JFK” has a film so successfully captured the fervour of investigative journalism, while also reminding us of the dangers of unchecked political power. It might just be one of the most important movies released this year.
