Review

It was a hot and humid day in the deep South when I first laid eyes on “The Color Purple,” a mesmerizing film that quickly became one of my favorites. The movie, which is based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, tells the story of Celie (played by Whoopi Goldberg), a young African American girl who faces tremendous adversity throughout her life.

The film opens with Celie as a child, living with her abusive father and younger sister Nettie. Her father soon forces her into a loveless marriage with Mr. Albert Johnson (played by Danny Glover) and separates her from Nettie, leaving Celie to live a life of drudgery and hopelessness.

As the story unfolds, we witness Celie’s transformation from meek and downtrodden to strong and resilient. She becomes friends with Shug Avery (played by Margaret Avery), Mr. Johnson’s mistress, who helps Celie discover her own sexuality and power. Meanwhile, Nettie has been living in Africa as a missionary, sending letters to Celie that Mr. Johnson keeps hidden.

One of the things that makes this movie truly special is its cast of unforgettable characters. From Sofia (played by Oprah Winfrey), the fierce and independent woman who inspires Celie to stand up for herself, to Harpo (played by Willard E. Pugh), Mr. Johnson’s son who struggles with his own masculinity, every character adds depth and complexity to the story.

The film also tackles important themes such as racism, sexism, domestic violence, and homophobia – all issues that continue to plague society today. Through Celie’s experiences we see how these injustices can shape a person’s life but also how they can be overcome through strength of will and support from others.

Another element that sets “The Color Purple” apart is its gorgeous score composed by Quincy Jones. From the hauntingly beautiful theme song to the joyous gospel numbers, the music adds another layer of emotion to an already powerful story.

The film was directed by Steven Spielberg, who was criticized at the time for being a white man telling a story about black women. However, his vision and sensitivity to the material helped bring this important story to a wider audience and earned him critical acclaim.

“The Color Purple” went on to receive numerous accolades, including 11 Academy Award nominations (though it won none), and has since become a beloved classic in American cinema. But perhaps its greatest legacy is the impact it has had on those who have seen it. Many have been moved to tears by its honest portrayal of struggle and triumph, and inspired by Celie’s resilience in the face of adversity.

As Gabriel Garcia Marquez once said, “What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it.” For me, “The Color Purple” is a film that will always be remembered as both a heartbreaking reminder of our society’s flaws and an inspiring testament to the human spirit.
