The Forger: A Masterpiece in the Making
When it comes to heist movies, not many movies get the balance right between action, suspense and emotion. But “The Forger,” directed by Philip Martin, has managed to find the perfect balance with its riveting storyline and impressive acting that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The story follows a convicted art forger named Raymond Cutter (played by John Travolta) who is released from prison early on the condition that he helps out with a dangerous art heist.
The film’s plot is intricately woven into a complex web of deceit and loyalty, which results in several unexpected twists and turns that keep viewers guessing until the very end. The narrative unfolds at a steady pace, allowing space for character development and emotional subtext without resorting to exposition or monotony.
One of the standout performances in this movie comes from Christopher Plummer’s portrayal of Joseph ‘Joe’ Cutter, Raymond’s father. His character brings humanity to the film’s crime aspect and his relationship with his son adds an element of heart that is essential to the movie.
Another noteworthy performance comes from Tye Sheridan as Will Cutter, Raymond’s son who has Leukemia. Sheridan evokes empathy and does an excellent job at conveying how helpless Will feels as he battles his illness.
One of my favorite quotes from this movie comes when Raymond reflects on his life as a forger: “I started doing it because I wanted people to appreciate beautiful things”. This line shows that Raymond is not only driven by greed but also motivated by his love of art.
The film’s success can also be attributed to its beautiful score composed by Julian Wass. His emotive music adds depth, nuance and tension to several scenes throughout the movie.
“The Forger” was shot entirely in Boston which lends an authentic flavor to every scene location-wise. The cinematography used in each scene creates an atmosphere that sucks you into the movie’s world.
The popularity of “The Forger” was well-earned. It tackles themes of family, art and loyalty in a thought-provoking way. The immaculate direction by Philip Martin and a great ensemble cast bring this story to life.
The film was not without its criticisms though as some critics argued that it lacked nuance. They also cited the narrative as being predictable at times.
Some fans were disappointed with the lack of special effects in the movie but I believe that what “The Forger” lacks in special effects, it makes up for with its emotional depth and layered characters.
“The Forger” premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival to mixed reviews. However, despite initial reception, it went on to achieve moderate success upon its release.
