Review

Thou art cordially invited to bear witness to the tale of “Charro!” a film which hath grabbed the hearts of many. This Western epic, writ and directed by Charles Marquis Warren, first rode into theaters in March of 1969 and since then, hath become an iconic masterpiece.

The story follows the life of a handsome man named Jess Wade, played by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Our hero is falsely accused of stealing a cannon from a U.S. Army post by the corrupt Marshal Barlowe, portrayed with menace by Victor French. A struggle between good and evil ensues as Jess attempts to clear his name and illicitly obtain his beloved horse ‘Turquoise,’ all while avoiding the wrath of Barlowe’s posse.

As with any classic Western, no story is complete without its heroes and villains. The late King of Rock n’ Roll embodied Jess perfectly—capturing his fierce determination to clear his name whilst charming audiences with his captivating presence. Charismatic beyond compare, Elvis captures the role with ease and leaves audiences spellbound.

Opposing our hero is Victor French’s foreboding portrayal of Marshal Barlowe. A cold-hearted man whose ideals are muddied by greed and power, French breathes life into this conniving villainous character superbly.

The screenplay itself boasts some truly unforgettable lines that capture the essence of Western culture; “If you can’t run then walk”, proclaims Jess as he dodges gunfire whilst escaping from Barlowe. It’s moments such as these that make “Charro!” a true masterpiece.

The film was quite different from other Elvis movies released at that time as it was not a musical dance-filled rom-com but rather fully focused on its action-packed storyline. The film succeeds in encapsulating every aspect of what makes Westerns so alluring to audiences—from action-packed gunfights atop horses to breathtaking stunts—there’s something for everyone.

The music featured in “Charro!” gives the film an added layer of depth and emotion. Tracks such as ‘Charro,’ ‘Half Breed,’ and ‘The King of the Whole Wide World’ will leave you humming along long after the credits roll.

Cinematography was handled brilliantly by Ellsworth Fredericks, his experience as a cinematographer on other Western projects such as “The Lone Ranger” and “Gunsmoke” is evident with every shot of sweeping landscapes, gunfights, and chase scenes.

From an economic standpoint, “Charro!” sadly did not perform well at the box office upon initial release. However, over time it has gained cult status within the Western genre that has cemented it if nothing else but as a must-watch for fans of Elvis, Westerns in general, or anyone looking for an enthralling adventure.

In conclusion, “Charro!” remains to this day an iconic piece of cinema that captures all the best aspects of traditional Western storytelling. With its cast of unforgettable characters, breathtaking set pieces, and memorable lines that evoke a bygone era—it’s a must-watch for any true cinema lover. Even The Bard himself would be proud to pen such a tale!
