As a Robert Cialdini fan, it is always interesting to study movies that utilize the principles of influence to captivate and engage their audiences. One such movie that does this exceptionally well is the 2015 psychological thriller, “The Gift.”
Directed by Joel Edgerton, who also co-wrote the film and starred in it alongside Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, “The Gift” tells the story of a successful couple – Simon and Robyn (Bateman and Hall) – who relocate to Los Angeles for Simon’s new job. Their seemingly idyllic life takes a dark turn when they encounter an old high school acquaintance of Simon’s – Gordon (Edgerton) – who begins leaving them mysterious gifts and unsettling memories from their past.
The movie does an excellent job of exploring the psychology behind relationships, trust, and self-preservation. It masterfully uses the principle of reciprocity by having Gordon give Simon and Robyn gifts, which they initially accept out of politeness. The gifts then become more personal as Gordon tries to insert himself into their lives.
The storyline is further enhanced by Edgerton’s incredible performance as Gordon. He delivers his lines with an eerie calmness that keeps the audience on edge throughout the movie. His character is complex and layered, as he moves fluidly between being charming and manipulative.
Hall also gives a standout performance as Robyn. She portrays vulnerability and strength simultaneously as she tries to navigate her way through her relationship with Simon while dealing with Gordon’s unwelcome attention.
Aside from its gripping storyline and excellent performances, “The Gift” also boasts impressive cinematography that adds depth to its themes. The use of shadows and light helps create a sense of foreboding throughout the movie.
Furthermore, the score composed by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans perfectly accentuates the tension on screen with haunting piano melodies mixed with orchestral sounds.
The movie was a commercial success, grossing over $59 million worldwide against a budget of $5 million. The film also received critical acclaim, earning a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Gift” was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Thriller Film, but despite this recognition, it was largely overlooked during award season. However, its impact has not diminished as it continues to be referenced in conversations about psychological thrillers.
