Review
Ladies and gentlemen, gather around as I regale you with a tale about a movie that will make even the most hardened hearts sing. A movie about a young girl named Terri Fletcher, who dreams of being a singer but is held back by her own fears and insecurities. This movie, my dears, is none other than “Raise Your Voice.”
Set in a quaint town in Arizona, this movie follows Terri as she navigates the ups and downs of being a teenager while also trying to achieve her dream of attending a music school in Los Angeles. But like any good story, there are obstacles at every turn. Cue Aunt Nina (played by none other than the talented Rebecca De Mornay), who tries to dissuade Terri from following her dreams because of the tragic loss of Terri’s brother.
But our plucky protagonist won’t let anyone hold her back. She auditions for the music school and gets accepted, but tragedy strikes once again when Terri’s beloved brother passes away suddenly. Heartbroken and lost, Terri must decide if she still wants to pursue her dreams or give up entirely.
As Mark Twain once said, “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” And this sentiment rings true for Terri as she decides to honor her brother’s memory by continuing on with her dream.
Alongside Hilary Duff’s exceptional acting, we are graced with the presence of John Corbett as Simon Fletcher – Terri’s father figure who encourages her every step of the way. And let us not forget Jason Ritter as Paul – the cute boy who captures our heroine’s heart.
But what truly sets this movie apart are its musical numbers. From classic hits like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to original songs like “Jericho,” we are treated to an auditory feast that will have you tapping your toes and humming along.
Director Sean McNamara expertly captures the spirit of the music and weaves it into the story seamlessly. As Twain once said, “When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don’t mean utterly, but kill most of them – then the rest will be valuable.” And McNamara does just that with his deft use of musical cues to evoke emotions without being heavy-handed.
Of course, as with any movie, there are critiques to be made. Some critics have pointed out the predictability of the plot or the lack of depth in certain secondary characters. But as Twain once said, “A man’s character may be learned from the adjectives which he habitually uses in conversation.” And I believe that “Raise Your Voice” has enough heart and soul to make up for any perceived shortcomings.
This movie speaks to anyone who has ever had a dream and felt like giving up. It reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we can find the strength to keep going and chase after what we want most. As Terri sings in her final performance, “God bless America/ Land that I love/ Stand beside her/ And guide her/ Through the night with a light from above.”
So raise your voices high and sing with me – for dreams are meant to be chased and nothing is impossible if we only try.
