Review

It’s been a long time since I watched a movie as peculiar as “The Longest Week.” This 2014 American film was directed by Peter Glanz and starred Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde, and Billy Crudup. Set in New York’s Upper East Side, this film is a romantic comedy-drama that certainly left an impression on me.

As Mark Twain once said, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started,” and this movie doesn’t waste any time diving headfirst into the story. Within minutes, we meet Conrad Valmont (Jason Bateman), a young millionaire who has been living off his wealthy parents since birth. His parents suddenly cut him off at the start of the movie, leaving him with nothing but his penthouse apartment and his best friend Dylan (Billy Crudup).

What follows is a charmingly quirky adventure that sees Conrad falling in love with Beatrice Fairbanks (Olivia Wilde), a woman he meets in the lobby of his own building. She is different from anyone he has ever met before – a free spirit who doesn’t care about money or status. It’s impossible not to be drawn into their relationship, which is both captivating and humorous.

Throughout the film, we see Conrad struggle to come to terms with his new life without the constant support of his parents. He experiences some serious self-discovery while at the same time falling deeper in love with Beatrice.

One aspect of this film that really stood out to me was its setting. The Upper East Side may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it perfectly illustrates how much wealth can corrupt an individual. The movie’s depiction of this part of New York is beautiful yet fleeting – something only appreciated from afar.

The characters themselves are just as intriguing as their surroundings. Jason Bateman played the role of Conrad superbly; he was charming yet naive – seemingly oblivious to how quickly everything could crumble around him if he didn’t take charge of his life. Olivia Wilde was perfect as Beatrice, giving the character a sense of free-spiritedness and independence that made her all the more interesting.

The supporting cast also deserves applause. Billy Crudup was exceptional as Dylan, Conrad’s best friend who is always there to keep him grounded. He’s the voice of reason in Conrad’s confusing world of privilege and entitlement. Jenny Slate played the role of Jocelyn, a woman who has an unusual connection to both Conrad and Beatrice.

The movie’s score was composed by Jay Israelson, and it captured the whimsical nature of the film perfectly. It was light yet poignant – adding depth to each scene.

When it comes to cinematography, I have nothing but good things to say about “The Longest Week.” The film was shot beautifully; every frame was expertly crafted with attention paid to even the smallest details. The colors were bright and vivid, making each scene look like a work of art.

Although not everyone will enjoy this movie as much as I did, I can guarantee it will stick with you long after it finishes playing. As Mark Twain once said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” And that’s what this movie does best – telling the truth about life and love in a quirky yet honest way.

In terms of awards recognition, “The Longest Week” didn’t receive any major accolades from critics or award shows at its release in 2014. However, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t appreciated by viewers who saw something special in its unique story.

Even years after its release date, this charming romantic comedy-drama still manages to hold up thanks to its stellar performances from an excellent cast and imaginative direction from Peter Glanz. It may not be for everyone, but those who give it a chance will definitely find themselves lost in its quirky world.

So, if you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh while also tugging at your heartstrings, “The Longest Week” is definitely worth your time. As Mark Twain once said, “The secret to success is to be ready when your opportunity comes.” And the opportunity to watch this film should not be missed.
